Mathews-Palmer Playground Mural Project
The Mathews-Palmer Playground 45th - 46th Street Associations, Hells Kitchen Commons and mural artist Denise Gieseke Penizzotto have joined together in an effort to save the historical mural Against Domestic Colonialism, originally painted by the late muralist Arnold Belkin, assistant muralist to Los Tres Grandes David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Artist and muralist Arnold Belkin, NYC resident during the city's tumultuous 1970s, gathered a distraught and underserved community together to create a mural that spoke of the difficulties of the times. Titled Against Domestic Colonialism it carries the message to the city, "We the People Demand Control of our Communities"; the mural spoke for the community then and does again today.
Over the past nearly 50 years the mural has fallen into a state of disrepair. The mural is now in need of a complete wall resurfacing prior to painting a re-creation restoration of the beloved mural. With your help the community is raising funds to bring this mural back to life.
